Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical aesthetics procedure used to reduce & eliminate the appearance of spider and reticular veins. During this procedure, a medical professional will inject a solution directly into a spider vein. This solution works to collapse the faulty vein and to reroute the blood back to healthier veins. The collapsed vein will then scar and reabsorb into the tissue, effectively fading its appearance.

What to Expect With Sclerotherapy

  • Consultation – Your first step with any cosmetic procedure at Fresh Medical Aesthetics is a free consultation, where our medical aesthetics experts will work with you to determine what your desired result is, how to best achieve this, & fully address any questions or concerns you have. Although it is a safe procedure, patients are cleared for sclerotherapy on a case by case basis.
  • The sclerotherapy procedure can typically take between 15-30 minutes.
  • Although it is not required, you can opt for a topical anesthetic to reduce injection pain. There is sometimes brief & mild discomfort as the veins are injected that can be described as a cramping feeling. This will generally subside quickly after the procedure. The majority of patients report minimal to no pain at all during this procedure.
  • A medical professional injects this sclerosing agent into each individual vein, which irritates the lining of the vein, swelling it shut and redirecting blood flow into healthier veins.
  • As each vein is injected, your nurse will apply compression to the area and massage to ensure the solution is properly dispersed.
  • You will be able to stand & walk around after the procedure but will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for a short period of time following sclerotherapy.
  • Patients will see the effects of sclerotherapy immediately, but it may take up to six weeks for larger veins to settle into their final appearance.
  • Veins treated with sclerotherapy typically do not return! You may, however, form new varicose veins that you can still treat with more sclerotherapy.
